Common tourist traps and how to avoid them

Scams and risky spots named in official travel advice for Argentina, in our own words.

  1. 'Mustard scam' distraction theft

How it works: In Buenos Aires, someone squirts a substance like mustard on you. While an accomplice pretends to help clean it off, your bags are taken. Thieves often work in teams of two or more.

How to avoid it: Keep hold of your bags and walk away from unsolicited help.

  2. Theft at check-in and on public transport

How it works: Thieves operate on public transport and in bus and train terminals. Some pose as hotel guests to snatch bags at check-in.

How to avoid it: Keep bags close and don't hang them on the back of your seat.

  3. Street taxis

How it works: Casual taxis are linked to robberies and express kidnappings.

How to avoid it: Book taxis in advance. If you hail one on the street, only use a 'radio taxi' with a clear logo on the doors.

Official advice: FCDO: no areas advised against.

Some links are affiliate links. Booking through them costs you nothing extra, and a small commission helps pay MyVisaPortโ€™s ongoing hosting and maintenance costs and keeps the site free of banner ads. We only list services we think are useful, and they never affect the visa information we publish. These offers are not part of the visa guidance above and are never used to rank routes. How partner links work

Verify with the embassy before you book. Visa rules change without notice. We link every rule to its official source and last checked it on 24 Oct 2026, but the embassy, official e-visa portal and your airline have the final say. MyVisaPort is not a visa agent and is not affiliated with any government.
