Explore Denmark: things to do, shopping, food and getting around
Copenhagen, from VisitDenmark and Visit Copenhagen, the official tourism organisations.
Things to do
Tivoli Gardens
Copenhagen
Denmark's most popular attraction, with more than 4 million visitors a year: rides, restaurants and concerts. It also opens at Halloween, Christmas and New Year, and for a winter season in February.
Canal tour
Copenhagen
Tours leave from Nyhavn or near Christiansborg and pass the Opera House, the Black Diamond library, the Little Mermaid and the canals of Christianshavn.
Changing of the guard at Amalienborg
Copenhagen
Four rococo palaces around a square; two are open to the public. The guard changes every day at noon.
Places to visit
Nyhavn
Copenhagen
Brightly painted 17th-century houses along a canal, once a sailors' port. Hans Christian Andersen lived at Nos. 20, 67 and 18. In December there's a Christmas market with glรธgg and รฆbleskiver.

Rosenborg Castle
Copenhagen
A 400-year-old Renaissance castle in the city centre that holds the Danish crown jewels.
The Round Tower
Copenhagen
Built in the 17th century and Europe's oldest working observatory; a spiral ramp leads to a viewing platform.
Shopping
StrรธgetUpmarket
Copenhagen
The central pedestrian street of the main shopping area, from budget and independent shops to exclusive brands. For Danish design, try Georg Jensen, Royal Copenhagen or Illums Bolighus.
Tax-free shoppingBudget
Copenhagen
Prices include 25% VAT. Non-EU residents travelling to a non-EU destination can claim it back at the airport with a refund form, on purchases of at least DKK 300 per shop.
Cheap ways to get around
Airport to the city
Copenhagen
The metro and trains leave from Terminal 3 and take about 15 minutes to the centre. The metro runs every 4โ6 minutes by day; trains leave from tracks 1 and 2.
Zones and tickets
Copenhagen
One ticket covers metro, buses, trains and harbour buses within its zones. Central sightseeing is mostly zones 1 and 2; the airport is in zone 4. Buy in the Rejsekort, DSB or Rejsebillet apps or at station machines before you travel. The metro runs 24 hours.

Nightlife
Summer evenings in Nyhavn
Copenhagen
In summer, live jazz often plays at Nyhavn's pavement cafรฉs.

Food
Smรธrrebrรธd
Copenhagen
The open-faced sandwich is as iconic as Tivoli; you can try it at Nyhavn's cafรฉs and many restaurants.
General tips
Christiania
Copenhagen
Some visitors find Christiania rough, especially around Pusher Street. Follow the do's and don'ts signs at the entrances and don't take photos or videos.
Money
Copenhagen
The currency is the Danish krone (DKK); the 1,000-krone note has been withdrawn since May 2025. Cards are widely accepted, so bring your PIN. Many shops close on Sundays, though department stores stay open.
