Common tourist traps and how to avoid them

Scams and risky spots named in official travel advice for Poland, plus a few reported in public visitor reviews (labelled), in our own words.

  1. Unofficial taxis

How it works: Unofficial drivers overcharge and passengers have been attacked, including in some ride-share bookings.

How to avoid it: Use official taxis with the company name and phone number on the door and roof and a rate card in the window โ€“ a crest alone is not enough.

  2. Drink spiking in bars

How it works: Victims of spiked drinks have been robbed in bars and clubs.

How to avoid it: Do not take drinks from strangers or leave yours alone.

  3. End-of-night card overcharging

How it works: Visitors paying by card at the end of a night out have been overcharged.

How to avoid it: Check the bill and the amount on the card terminal before paying.

  4. Theft on trains and after cash withdrawals

How it works: Thieves target stations, trains (including sleepers) and people who have just used an ATM.

How to avoid it: Keep valuables hidden and be careful after withdrawing cash.

  5. Go-go club invitations in Krakรณw's Old Town (visitor reports)

How it works: Late at night, women approach foreign men near the Main Market Square and invite them to a club. Inside there are no prices on show, and the bill runs to hundreds or thousands of zล‚oty, sometimes charged in a foreign currency. Some victims say they were drugged and later found extra card payments. Krakรณw police took 41 such complaints in the Old Town between April and October 2022.

How to avoid it: Turn down invitations from strangers, ask to see prices before you order, don't accept free shots, and check the amount and currency on the card terminal before you enter your PIN.
