Working in France

Main work visa routes for France

These are the main routes and what they require. Whether you qualify depends on your circumstances; the official page decides.

Salaried employee (with a work permit obtained by the employer)

For: Non-EU nationals hired by a French employer

  • The employer must first obtain a work permit (autorisation de travail) before hiring you
  • Then a long-stay visa / residence card "employee" or "temporary worker"

Source: Service-Public.fr – Authorization to work for a foreign employee (service-public.fr).

What the source says

"The employer who wishes to hire an employee foreigner not European (UE + EEE + Switzerland) in France must first obtain a work permit." … "If the foreigner has a VLS-TS or a residence card « employee » or « temporary worker » , a work authorization is mandatory so he can work."

Talent residence card – qualified employee / innovative company / assignment

For: Qualified employees (e.g. master's-level diploma obtained in France), staff of innovative companies, and employees on assignment from a group abroad

  • Employment contract with annual gross pay of at least €39,582
  • No work permit needed by the employer
Length
Same as the employment contract, up to 4 years

Source: Service-Public.fr – Talent card (multi-year residence card) (service-public.fr).

What the source says

"Your employer does not have to apply for a work permit and is exempt from paying the foreigner employment tax. The card is valid for the same period as the employment contract, up to a maximum of 4 years." … "Have an employment contract of more than 3 months that provides for an annual gross remuneration greater than or equal to €39,582 ."

Talent – European Blue Card

For: Highly qualified employees

  • Diploma for at least 3 years of higher education, or 5 years of comparable professional experience
  • No work permit needed by the employer
Length
Contract of 2+ years: length of the contract up to 4 years; shorter contract: contract plus 3 months, up to 2 years

Source: Service-Public.fr – Talent card (European Blue Card) (service-public.fr).

What the source says

"Have a diploma attesting to at least 3 years of higher education or 5 years of professional experience" … "Where the employment contract has a duration of at least 2 years, the card is issued for a duration equal to that of the contract, within the limit of 4 years"

Transit through France

Option 1
Visa-freeAirport transit (changing flights in France)

Airside transit: no airport transit visa needed; leaving the transit area needs normal Schengen entry

Unless your nationality is on the EU common airport-transit-visa list or France's national list (those passports have their own rule here), you don't need an airport transit visa to change planes in the international transit area of an airport in France. If you have to pass through border control (e.g. to collect bags, change airport or terminal outside the transit area, or your onward flight is to another Schengen country), you are entering the Schengen area and the normal entry rules for your passport apply - see the holiday section.

Conditions

  • Stay in the airport's international transit area (do not pass border control).
  • Flights to or from another Schengen country count as entering the Schengen area: normal entry rules for your passport apply.
  • Hold the documents required for your final destination; your airline may check them.

Common tourist traps

  1. Pickpocket teams on the Métro and RER

How it works: One thief distracts you (a question, a bump, a petition) while another opens your bag, mostly on the Paris Métro, RER lines, airport trains and at big stations.

How to avoid it: Wear your bag across your body, split cards, cash and passport between pockets, and stay alert at ticket machines, ATMs and doors.

  2. "Free drink" at a private club

How it works: A friendly stranger invites you for a free drink or show at a private club; you then face huge charges on your card before you are allowed to leave.

How to avoid it: Turn down invitations from people you just met and choose bars yourself.

  3. Card skimming

How it works: Devices fitted to ATMs and unattended petrol-station pumps copy your card, especially in tourist areas.

How to avoid it: Use ATMs inside banks or shopping centres, cover your PIN and keep the card in sight.
