Common tourist traps

  1. Drink spiking

How it works: Spiking linked to sexual assault is reported in Bali, Lombok and the Gili Islands, including after inviting new acquaintances to hotel rooms.

How to avoid it: Watch drinks being made, never leave them alone, do not accept drinks from strangers.

  2. Bag-snatching in Bali

How it works: Bags are often snatched in busy tourist areas.

How to avoid it: Conceal your bag and carry only essentials.

  3. Card fraud and fake ATM helplines

How it works: Cards are copied out of sight; fake "help" numbers on ATMs are used to get card details.

How to avoid it: Keep your card in view and call only your bank's official number.
