Working in Brazil

Main work visa routes for Brazil

These are the main routes and what they require. Whether you qualify depends on your circumstances; the official page decides.

Temporary work visa (VITEM V)

For: Foreigners sponsored by a company in Brazil

  • Prior approval by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, requested in Brazil by the sponsoring company
  • Then apply at the Brazilian embassy/consulate (e-consular system)

Source: Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Brazil) – Embassy in Bangkok: Work (VITEM V) (gov.br).

What the source says

"Work visas are subject to prior approval by the Brazilian Ministry of Justice and Public Security. The process must be initiated in Brazil, by the sponsoring company (on behalf of the applicant), with submission of the pertinent application and supporting documentation to that Ministry."

Checked 16 Oct 2026. Overview: Portal de Imigração Laboral. Requirements, fees and thresholds change; confirm on the official page before applying.

Transit through Brazil

Option 1
Visa-freeTransit (changing flights in Brazil)

Airside transit: no Brazilian visa if you stay in the international transit area

Foreigners connecting at Brazilian airports to a third country do not need a Brazilian visa as long as they do not leave the international transit area. If you have to leave it (for example to check in again), you pass immigration and need a visit visa unless your passport is visa-exempt - see the holiday section.

Conditions

  • Stay in the international transit area.
  • A new check-in usually means passing immigration.
