Common tourist traps and how to avoid them

Scams and risky spots named in official travel advice for Belgium, plus a few reported in public visitor reviews (labelled), in our own words.

  1. Luggage theft on high-speed trains

How it works: Bags are taken from racks at the end of carriages just before the doors close.

How to avoid it: Keep luggage near you and watch it at stops.

  2. Thieves at Brussels stations

How it works: Pickpockets and muggers operate at Brussels-Midi (Eurostar) and Brussels-Nord and in the EU quarter; violent robberies have occurred.

How to avoid it: Stay alert, particularly at night, and beware of distractions.

  3. Smash-and-grab at traffic lights

How it works: Thieves on motorbikes break car windows and grab valuables from the seats.

How to avoid it: Keep bags out of sight, doors locked.

  4. Taxis that stop to offer rides

How it works: Unofficial drivers tout for passengers.

How to avoid it: Only use official licensed taxis.

  5. "Window tapping" smuggling approaches

How it works: Truck and van drivers are approached at service stations and asked to carry goods to the UK.

How to avoid it: Refuse and report it to police.

  6. Inflated bills on Rue des Bouchers

How it works: Waiters tout passers-by into restaurants on this street off the Grand-Place. Visitors report misleading set menus and bills padded with bread, water and extras.

How to avoid it: Check every price before you sit down, or eat elsewhere.

Optional travel offers

Some links are affiliate links. Booking through them costs you nothing extra, and a small commission helps pay MyVisaPortโ€™s ongoing hosting and maintenance costs and keeps the site free of banner ads. We only list services we think are useful, and they never affect the visa information we publish. These offers are not part of the visa guidance above and are never used to rank routes. How partner links work

Verify with the embassy before you book. Visa rules change without notice. We link every rule to its official source and last checked it on 2 Nov 2026, but the embassy, official e-visa portal and your airline have the final say.
