Common tourist traps and how to avoid them

Scams and risky spots named in official travel advice for Netherlands, plus a few reported in public visitor reviews (labelled), in our own words.

  1. Distraction gangs on airport trains and trams

How it works: Gangs work trains and trams between Schiphol and Amsterdam Centraal: one distracts, another takes your bag; sleepers are easy targets.

How to avoid it: Keep luggage in sight and do not doze off.

  2. Restaurant bag theft

How it works: Thieves enter restaurants pretending to sell something or look for someone and take bags from chairs.

How to avoid it: Keep bags on your lap or between your feet, not on the chair back.

  3. Fake police

How it works: Criminals posing as police say they are checking for counterfeit money or cards and take your cash and cards; they may show shiny badges, which real Dutch police do not have.

How to avoid it: Do not hand anything over; call 0900 8844 to check the officer.

  4. Drink spiking

How it works: Spiking is a risk, particularly for young women and solo travellers.

How to avoid it: Do not leave drinks unattended; stay with your group.

  5. Street drug dealers in the Red Light District (visitor reports)

How it works: Visitors on Reddit describe men offering 'coke' late at night in the Red Light District (De Wallen). The City of Amsterdam warns that street dealers at tourist hotspots often sell fake and possibly dangerous drugs, and may intimidate or rob buyers, especially young visitors they separate from their friends.

How to avoid it: Ignore them and keep walking; don't stop or argue. Buying any hard drug is illegal in the Netherlands.
