Common tourist traps and how to avoid them

Scams and risky spots named in official travel advice for Georgia, plus a few reported in public visitor reviews (labelled), in our own words.

  1. Stranger takes you to a restaurant or club

How it works: Strangers lead visitors to restaurants or nightclubs where food or drinks may be drugged.

How to avoid it: Decline, buy your own drinks and keep them in sight.

  2. Prices in dollars or euros

How it works: Prices may be quoted in USD or EUR, but you must pay in lari.

How to avoid it: Confirm the lari price before agreeing.

  3. Street taxis

How it works: Flagged taxis are less safe and may lack seatbelts.

How to avoid it: Pre-book through an app and check seatbelts work.

  4. Pickpocketing

How it works: Pickpockets work crowded places.

How to avoid it: Keep valuables close.

  5. Bar invitations that end in a huge bill

How it works: Visitors are invited into a bar or club, often by women they've just met. Drinks are ordered on their behalf, then a hugely inflated bill arrives, sometimes backed by intimidation. Georgian police have arrested organised groups running this scheme.

How to avoid it: Turn down invitations from strangers, check prices before you order, and don't let anyone else order for you.

Booking through them costs you nothing extra, and a small commission helps pay MyVisaPortโ€™s ongoing hosting and maintenance costs and keeps the site free of banner ads. How partner links work

Verify with the embassy before you book. Visa rules change without notice.
