🇹🇷 Türkiye (Turkey)

Istanbul's mosques and bazaars, Cappadocia's balloon flights and a long Mediterranean coast. For many Indian passport holders the deciding factor is the visa route: a US, UK, Schengen or Irish visa or residence permit unlocks the online e-Visa.

Common tourist traps and how to avoid them

Scams and risky spots named in official travel advice for Türkiye (Turkey), plus a few reported in public visitor reviews (labelled), in our own words.

  1. Friendly stranger, spiked food or drink

How it works: Someone offers to change money or take you to a restaurant or club; food or drinks are spiked and you are robbed.

How to avoid it: Decline such offers, buy your own drinks and keep them in sight.

  2. Fake USD 50 and 100 notes

How it works: Counterfeit 50 and 100 dollar bills are circulating; banks and exchanges may refuse them.

How to avoid it: Avoid accepting these notes in change.

  3. Methanol in bootleg alcohol

How it works: Illegally made spirits and fake branded bottles have killed people, including in Istanbul and Ankara.

How to avoid it: Buy alcohol only from reputable outlets; get urgent help if you feel ill after drinking.

  4. Unofficial taxis

How it works: Accepting lifts from unofficial drivers is high-risk.

How to avoid it: Use registered taxis, note the plate and make sure the meter runs, or use an app/pre-booked taxi.

  5. Street robbery in Istanbul

How it works: Pickpocketing and street robbery are common in the main tourist areas of Istanbul.

How to avoid it: Keep belongings secured and close, especially in crowds.

  6. Under-18s refused at hotels

How it works: Some hotels will not check in under-18s travelling without a parent unless they bring written (sometimes notarised) parental consent.

How to avoid it: Check with the hotel in advance and carry the consent letter.

  7. The dropped shoe-shine brush

How it works: A shoe shiner walking ahead of you drops a brush; when you hand it back he insists on a 'free' shine as thanks, then asks for a large sum. Reported around Sultanahmet and İstiklal Avenue.

How to avoid it: Don't pick up the brush, or hand it back and say no thanks. Never let anyone start on your shoes without agreeing a price first.

Where to stay in Istanbul

Istanbul straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus. Most first-time visitors split their stay between the Old City (Sultanahmet) for the great mosques and bazaars and Beyoğlu/Taksim for food, nightlife and shopping.

  • Sultanahmet (Old City)

Best for: First-timers, sightseeing on foot

Walking distance to Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar; many reasonably priced hotels with terraces and most hostels are here.

  • Taksim / Beyoğlu

Best for: Nightlife, shopping, budget to mid-range

The main centre of the 'new city' on the European side, with İstiklal Avenue, plenty of moderate hotels and hostels.

  • Harbiye / Nişantaşı

Best for: Apartments and upscale stays

Close to Taksim with international-standard apartments and hotels; Nişantaşı is the upscale fashion district.

  • Bosphorus shore (European side)

    Best for: Luxury and views

Upscale hotels line the European banks of the Bosphorus.

Best places for shopping

  • Grand Bazaar & Old City bazaars

    Rugs, kilims, jewellery, souvenirs

💡 Very touristy — great for photos, but bargain hard and compare prices; many rug shops around Sultanahmet target tourists.

  • Spice Bazaar (Eminönü)

    Spices, nuts, Turkish delight, tea

💡 Prices here can be two to three times higher than elsewhere in the city; Üsküdar and other central markets are cheaper.

  • İstiklal Avenue (Beyoğlu)

Turkish delight and sweets by the kilo, high-street fashion

💡 Several shops sell fresh lokum and helva by weight — fresher and cheaper than pre-packed boxes.

  • Nişantaşı & Bağdat Avenue

    Upscale fashion

💡 Nişantaşı on the European side, Bağdat Avenue on the Asian side.

  • Laleli

    Textile wholesale

    💡 Wholesale clothing district.

Areas to avoid & theft risks

Pickpocketing, mugging and scam hot-spots, each linked to its source.

Getting around Istanbul

  • İstanbulkart

Rechargeable transport card valid on metro, tram, ferries and buses — far cheaper than single tickets.

  • Tram T1

Links Sultanahmet, Eminönü and Kabataş — the most useful line for sightseeing.

  • Ferries

Cross between Europe and Asia (Eminönü/Karaköy ↔ Kadıköy/Üsküdar) for the price of a transit fare.

  • Taxis

Traffic is heavy and drivers rarely follow road rules — be careful crossing streets even on green.
