Common tourist traps and how to avoid them

Scams and risky spots named in official travel advice for Morocco, plus a few reported in public visitor reviews (labelled), in our own words.

  1. Swapped goods and card fraud

How it works: Credit card fraud and scams are common, including sellers swapping what you bought for inferior goods.

How to avoid it: Watch your card when you pay and check your purchase before leaving the shop.

  2. Bag-snatching and motorbike theft

How it works: Pickpockets, bag-snatchers and thieves on motorbikes target visible jewellery and handbags in cities and on beaches.

How to avoid it: Keep valuables out of sight, and be careful when asking for directions or using ATMs.

  3. Unlicensed ride-hailing taxis

How it works: Many taxis booked through apps may be unlicensed and uninsured, and police may order you out of one.

How to avoid it: Use licensed petit or grand taxis and agree the fare or check the meter.

  4. 'That way is closed' fake guides in the medina

How it works: Someone tells you the street ahead is closed, then leads you through alleys to a tannery or shop and demands payment or pushes you to buy.

How to avoid it: Keep walking and politely decline unsolicited directions. Use an offline map, or ask staff in a shop.

Optional travel offers

Some links are affiliate links. Booking through them costs you nothing extra, and a small commission helps pay MyVisaPortโ€™s ongoing hosting and maintenance costs and keeps the site free of banner ads. We only list services we think are useful, and they never affect the visa information we publish. These offers are not part of the visa guidance above and are never used to rank routes. How partner links work

Verify with the embassy before you book. Visa rules change without notice. We link every rule to its official source and last checked it on 24 Oct 2026, but the embassy, official e-visa portal and your airline have the final say. MyVisaPort is not a visa agent and is not affiliated with any government.
