Common tourist traps and how to avoid them
Scams and risky spots named in official travel advice for Tunisia, plus a few reported in public visitor reviews (labelled), in our own words.
Confidence tricks as a distraction
How it works: Thieves sometimes use confidence tricks to distract you while they steal.
How to avoid it: Don't show expensive items, don't leave things unattended, and carry only what you need.
Taxis without the meter on
How it works: Some drivers at Tunis airport and in tourist areas won't use the meter, use the night rate by day, or add made-up charges.
How to avoid it: Make sure the meter is switched on before the car moves, or use a ride app. For Sidi Bou Said, the TGM train is an option.
