Common tourist traps and how to avoid them
Scams and risky spots named in official travel advice for Uzbekistan, plus a few reported in public visitor reviews (labelled), in our own words.

How to avoid it: Keep belongings in sight and spread valuables out.
Black-market money exchange
How it works: Changing money on the black market is illegal with harsh penalties; booths reject damaged or pre-2013 dollars.
How to avoid it: Use official booths and bring clean, recent USD notes.
Unlicensed taxis
How it works: Unlicensed taxis remain common.
How to avoid it: Use official airport taxis or apps like Yandex or MyTaxi.
Photography of official sites
How it works: Photos of government buildings (e.g. the Palace of Forums), metro stations, bridges, borders and police stations can upset authorities.
How to avoid it: Ask before taking photos near such places.
Airport taxi touts in Tashkent
How it works: Touts at arrivals offer rides, then charge many times the app fare or take detours.
How to avoid it: Get a local SIM or eSIM, book through a taxi app from the terminal, and don't tell touts where you're going.
