Common tourist traps and how to avoid them

Scams and risky spots named in official travel advice for Cambodia, plus a few reported in public visitor reviews (labelled), in our own words.

  1. Motorbike bag and phone snatching

How it works: Thieves on motorbikes cut straps and snatch bags or phones from pedestrians, tuk-tuk and bike passengers, often injuring them.

How to avoid it: Carry bags away from the road, not in bike baskets, and use tuk-tuks with side grilles.

  2. Fake dollars in change

How it works: Shops and clubs have given fake or damaged US dollar notes as change.

How to avoid it: Check notes you receive.

  3. Job scams and trafficking

How it works: "Easy, high-paid" jobs lead to locked compounds around Sihanoukville, Kandal and border areas, passports withheld.

How to avoid it: Treat such offers with suspicion and verify employers.

  4. Drink spiking

How it works: Police report spiking in some bars used by foreigners.

How to avoid it: Do not leave drinks unattended.

  5. Methanol poisoning

How it works: Methanol-laced drinks have killed people.

How to avoid it: Stick to sealed, branded drinks.

  6. Theft on buses while asleep

How it works: Items are taken from bags on bus journeys.

How to avoid it: Keep valuables on you.

  7. Tuk-tuk fares not agreed in advance

How it works: Visitors report drivers in Siem Reap quoting far above normal rates, or raising the price after the ride, when the fare and route weren't fixed at the start.

How to avoid it: Agree the full price and the temple route before you set off, or book through a ride-hailing app.

Verify with the embassy before you book. Visa rules change without notice.
