Common tourist traps and how to avoid them

Scams and risky spots named in official travel advice for Singapore, plus a few reported in public visitor reviews (labelled), in our own words.

  1. Phone and online impersonation scams

How it works: Callers or messages pretend to be officials or bank staff.

How to avoid it: Hang up and call the agency or bank on its official number.

  2. Live seafood priced per 100 g

How it works: Live crab and other seafood are often priced per 100 g, and a large crab can weigh several kilos, so the bill can run into hundreds of dollars. Tourists have reported shock bills and disputed them.

How to avoid it: Before it is cooked, ask for the weight and the total price of the dish, and confirm them in writing.
